I've been seeing a lot of these for sale lately by members here. Partially used boxes. Why all the hate?506 I think is the G1, that's not terrible for that size.30 bullet.Sierra bullets fly pretty good normally. I'm shooting their 6.5 130gr HPBT in a 6.5-06 which doesn't have too good of a BC, but shoot great.I've just bought some that a guy was trying to unload, just seen some more for sale.So if they are junk let me know so I can save powder in my 300wm and I will just use the for varmints in a 308. Start with the SMKs about.010' off the lands. Match Kings don't like to be jammed in my experience. A rule of thumb is caliber depth in the neck but, your loading for a match chamber so ignor that. You need to know the max length to lands at the ogive and seat.010' deeper. I also recommend measuring your bullets from base to ogive as Sierras can differ in length as much as.007'.I tried that bullet in my Parker Hale (1 in 14' twist) barreled Mauser but it didn't shoot as well as the 150gr SMK. So far, I'm getting a 1.2' group at 200 yards and 1.9' groups at 300 yards with the 150 SMK loaded to 2715 fps.
This was shot in a variable 15- 20 mph wind Jan 1st, 2011.Cheers. My 155gr load for #2156 155gr Palma SMK, 155gr HBC and 155gr Nosler HPBT is 46.5gr Varget in Lapua brass with CCI BR2 primer. #2156 is seated to 2.850 approx, HBC is 2.900 and Nosler is 2.805. The loads all shoot under 0.5MOA at 100yds and have shot around 1MOA (could be better if no scope adjustments where made) at 600yds, havent really measured it but (thats going off the score I got). You can get to 2950fps with a 24' barrel but you will be really pushing your load and will most likely be over max recommended load.If you want to shoot LR with the 308, I'd switch to the 175gr SMK or similar rebarrel your 308 to 26' or preferebly 30' for use with 155gr projies. These need to be supersonic at the target and getting to 2950 minimum is usually whats needed to get the supersonic at 1000yds for Palma, F-Class, etc. I have a 26' barreled 308 in a Krieger 1-12T which pushes my 155gr HBC load to around 2985fps.
Thats with 46.5gr Varget (ADI AR2208).FYI, the 155gr HBC VLD is a Australian made projie whic you may or may not be able to get over there. Id think probably not but they are the choice for australian 308 LR target shooters under TR/FullBore (Palma) and F-Standard (F-Class but restricted to 223 or 308 and to 4x 308 projies only (#2156, #2155, HBC, Nosler). My goto load in 155s uses 47.8 gr varget in Win cases and 47.4 gr Varget in Lapua cases, CCI primers, and 155s.
My gun has a long throat so I seat bullets at 2.948.Try working your way up to the 2950 fps range, watching pressure signs along the way, and seating to 0.010-0.020 jump distances.Found my load 47.4 gr of 2208 (varget) lapua cases cci br 2 primers with a 20' jump but all I could get out of it was 2900 fps it shot.434' five shot group at 100 meters. Hotter loads started to open up.I hope the load will shoot just as good next timeDo you guys think this is fast enough? If not any suggestions.2900 fps.434' five shot group at 100 meters.
Hotter loads started to open up.Do you guys think this is fast enough? If not any suggestionsWell, here's my take: it sounds like you've attained the level of accuracy you want with the load and rifle. To me, whatever speed it's going when it leaves is whatever it is.I don't even KNOW the exact speed of my match loads, and I don't really care.Getting wrapped around the axle of velocity chasing is not a place you want to go. If you want better ballistic performance, then you should get a longer barrel.Story of my life.-Nate.
